Are You Letting Your Roots Grow Down Into Christ?

One of my favorite things to do with my sons in the garden is to plant multicolored carrots. In the fall they are so delighted as they pull the carrots from their deeply nestled space in the garden, wondering what color will pop out of the hole.
Paul exhorts us in Colossians 2:7 to;
Let your roots grow down into him (Christ), and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
When we make way in the soil of our hearts for our roots to grow deep down into Christ, allowing our lives to be built on him, our faith grows strong and straight like a carrot and as we see the fruit of our cultivation we will overflow with thankfulness.
In order for us to cultivate a life rooted and built on Christ we must prepare the soil of our hearts, making sure that it is not fallow or unplowed but we must walk through the garden of our hearts as we read the word of God, allowing it to have its perfecting work at spotting the obstacles to soft supple soil, digging them out with the pick-ax of truth.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active,
sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing to the division of soul and of spirit,
of joints and of marrow,
and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
As we read the word of God, allowing it to penetrate and have access into our belief systems, we are in essence letting our roots grow down into Christ for the Word of God makes way for our lives to be built on Him. He IS the Word!
If we truly want our lives to be sweet, crisp, colorful and straight like a healthy carrot, we must make way for His word to aerate the fallow soil of our hearts.
Hosea 10:12
Sow for yourselves righteousness;
reap steadfast love;
break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the LORD,
that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.
Seeking the Lord in His word, we are sowing for ourselves righteousness and steadfast love.
Hosea goes on to say;
You have plowed in iniquity;
you have reaped injustice;
you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
and in the multitude of your warriors,
therefore the tumult of war shall arise among your people,
and all your fortresses shall be destroyed.
We see here when we plow for our own harvest we reap injustice and we eat lies. When we are not reading the word of God we are trusting in our own way and in our own strength and this will lead to destruction.
God will allow us to build our own fortresses but our foundation will be made out of sand not the solid rock of Christ.
We reject the most important stone when we reject the word of God, the cornerstone, and without this stone, we will crumble and we will not be able stand tall and straight drinking deeply from the well of righteousness, Jesus, or only source of living water.
He wants to rain down righteousness on the garden of our hearts, penetrating and providing the pathway for our roots to grow down deep into Christ but if we refuse to read the Word of God, we are refusing Christ as Lord and our hearts will become fallow and infested with thorns. Overtime, these thorns will block out the light and truth of Christ and we will die without His light and righteousness.
If we are not reading the Word of God, our faith will not grow strong in the truth and we will not have lives that are marked by thankfulness.
Father, thank you for your Word, thank you for sending Him in the likeness of sinful man so that we can see you more clearly. Cultivate a desire in our hearts for your word, a deep hunger by Your Spirit that cannot be quenched, so that our faith will grow strong and straight, burrowing down deep into our hearts awaiting the great harvest of our souls from this earth by Your hand.
Make way for your roots to grow down deep in Christ,
by allowing His word to penetrate your fallow heart today,
so that your life can be full of crisp, sweet, refreshing,
colorful, and thankful faith that is a delight to all!
by allowing His word to penetrate your fallow heart today,
so that your life can be full of crisp, sweet, refreshing,
colorful, and thankful faith that is a delight to all!
