Grace is the Key to Walking In The Spirit

Galatians 5 paints a whirlwind of sinful traits exhorting us to walk in the Spirit.

When we decide to follow after the desires of our flesh and disregard the ever present Spirit in our hearts, we are led on a path of the works of the flesh.

Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law.

We are called to walk in the Spirit, to be led about by the Lord's ever present help.   This is the grace of God.

We find in the Strong's concordance that grace (charis) is that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness and grace of speech.

This is the same grace that was upon Jesus as he was growing up.

John 1:16 says

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

Because we have received grace we can walk in the Spirit.  We can love the unlovely, we can be full of joy when it doesn't make sense to the rest of the world because we are given everything we need to grow and flourish in these godly attributes mentioned in Galatians.

Grace is what affords joy!  This means that it makes available or supplies us with everything  necessary to walk in the Spirit.  We can walk in love, joy, and peace because of the grace of God!

So the good news is that we don't have to try harder to behave but we must ask God to show us His grace through our flesh so that we can see rightly the means by which He empowers us to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh.

At the conception of the church, the hand of the Lord was upon the people causing them to believe and turn to the Lord.  As Barnabas was sent to Antioch, Acts 11:23 shows us the importance of us seeing the grace of God;

When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.  And a great many people were added to the Lord.

Our grace-filled, Spirit directed lives will cause us to be glad and exhort one another to remain faithful with steadfast purpose.

As we walk in the Spirit, empowered by the grace of God to present the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, many people will be added to the Lord.

Father, give us a revelation of Your grace in the face of Jesus!  Thank you that this walking in the Spirit is not about us trying harder but about us leaning on the already provided grace that furnishes our lives with great joy!

Thank You that You love us and have provided everything that we need to grow up into Christ because of His sacrifice for our lives.

Help us Lord to be resolved to continue steadfastly in faith, fully pleasing You.  Help us to avoid the path of sin which is a slippery slope that moves us away from Your grace.  Show us the path back to you!
